The meaning of EDP, EDT, Perfume
EDP- Perfume water- 10-20% (oil defines longevity of perfume) concentration of aromatic compounds, 80-90% alcohol. Usually it is called “daily fragrance”. In simple words - concentrated toilet water. But it is not all. Perfume water contents essential oil components which, differs it from toilet water. Longevity lasts hours to days.
EDT - Eau De Toilette – Toilet water – Combination of essential oils, alcohol aromatic components(floral,tree, citrus).Toilet water is more light version of perfume water. Longevity lasts hours to days. Oil concentration of toilet water is 4-10%, alcohol is 90%. This is more light version of the fragrances that can be used couple of times in a day. Longevity is weaker than EDP and perfume. Today, this is widespread type in women perfume , men perfumery is almost the toilet water.
Toilet water officially came into use thanks to Napoleon Bonaparte. While he was in exile on the island of Saint Helena, invented special recipe of aromatic water by adding bergamot into his finished cologne. Emperor called his invention toilet water and this term is official since that time. Looking at the history of toilet water appears to be much older. Even in ancient times toilet water was used for a wide range – it was used in washing curtains, adding to town fountains, freshen up air.
EDC (ODC) - Eau de Cologne – Cologne – the least condensed perfume. (3-5 % extract, 70% alcohol). Eau de Cologne – this was created by Italian perfumer Johann Maria Farina and was named in honor of his hometown Köln (Cologne)
Perfume – The most expensive, condensed, longevity among perfumery types, contents the highest percentage of essential oils (18-30 %) with pure alcohol compound (96 %). This is why perfumes considered with highest longevity, a few drops on cotton keeps it smell more than 30 hours. Currently assortment of concentrated perfume fragrances produced by most perfumers consist of perfume water.
